According to recent data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 13,386 deaths were caused by drunk drivers nationwide in 2021. This is the largest number of drunk driving fatalities since 2005. Current laws are clearly not working. The legislature needs to revisit the punishment for intoxication manslaughter which still carries the possibility of probation. The legislature should consider adapting mandatory prison time for all drunk driving fatalities. Stiffer penalties need to be enforced against bars responsible for over-service of alcohol to their customers. The old way is simply not working and too many innocent lives are being lost to drunk driving.
