Deputy Meredith Portillo one of several killed in wrong-way collision.
Meredith Portillo had been with the Bexar County Sheriff's Office since September 2023. She graduated detention academy earlier this year. Meredith Portillo was one of three people killed in a head-on collision caused by a wrong-way driver in the early morning hours of July 21, 2024. San Antonio Police indicated that a pickup was northbound in the southbound lanes of IH-37 at Loop 1604 around 1:50 a.m. when the crash occurred. Two other people who died in the crash were not yet identified. A fourth person was hospitalized. When wrong-way crashes happen at this time of night, alcohol is frequently a factor. Toxicology tests will determine whether the wrong-way driver was intoxicated. In Texas, it is illegal for bars to over-serve alcohol to customers who are obviously intoxicated. Driving the wrong way down a one-way freeway is a frequent sign of obvious intoxication. If you or a loved one have been the victim of drunk drivers, do not give the bars a free pass.
